6 Crazy Run’s You’ve Got To Try!!

If you would have asked me 10+ years ago if I was a runner I would have laughed and said, “Only if someone or something is chasing me.”  So how in the world is it that now a days on any given Saturday you will find me at a local 5K getting in my daily log of miles?  I have no idea!!!   After my first child was born a friend of mine convinced me to get my but off the couch and out of the house for a fun run to raise money for the elementary school that she taught at and a good 100 5K’s later here I am.  No you don’t have to be crazy and commit to one 5K a month like me, but I DARE you to check these FUN RUNS out and give it a try, you may surprise yourself and like it…

FunRun9Bay To Breakers This annual “anything goes” marathon in San Francisco is where you let your freak flag fly. Held the third Sunday of May, it’s one of the largest footraces in the world that attracts more than 50,000 participants and twice the number of spectators who come out to see the spectacle of crazy costumes, eccentric personalities, and centipedes — teams of 13 runners all connected to each other through the entirety of the run. There’s also a costume contest, so consider this your second Halloween.

Walt Disney World Marathon WeekendDisney is home to a full FunRun8range of Disney-themed races — Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge for the not-so-coordinated, The Dopey Challenbfge for the even less-coordinated, a family fun run, and a Disney race just for the kids. Jogging through the Happiest Place on Earth has major perks — along with a unique tour of the park, you get a high-fives from Disney characters and priceless photo ops along the way.

FunRun7Warrior Dash As the world’s largest obstacle race series, the Warrior Dash isn’t for the faint-hearted (or out of shape). The 3-4 mile course is riddled with 12 extreme obstacles with daunting names like “Warrior Roast” (yes, fire is involved) and “Storming Normandy.” If you make it out in one piece, you get to celebrate the conquest of the battleground in true warrior spirit with turkey legs, beer steins, and live music. Proceeds go to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

FunRun3The Color Run is our stateside version of the Holi festival. Referred to as “The Happiest 5K on Earth,” the vividness of this marathon makes it pure Instagram gold. At the starting line, all participants are decked out in pristine white tees, and at each kilometer runners are blitzed by volunteers, sponsors, and staffers with brightly colored powder — 1K is yellow, 2K is blue, 3K is green, 4K is pink, and once you hit 5K, you enter “color extravaganza” territory. By the time you get to the finish line, you’re a walking (or possibly limping) piece of art.

The Undie Run Let’s face it: we all hate wearing pants. If we didn’t have to, we probably wouldn’t. Instead of burning calories getting dressed, the Undie Run allows you to focus all of your energy on FunRun6running for a good cause. Originally intended for college co-eds to raise funds for Cancer for College, an organization that awards college scholarships to cancer survivors, organizers are now working to get theentire community involved in stripping to their skivvies in the name of fundraising, a.k.a. “the sexiest charity work you can ever do!” as MTV so accurately put it.

Hot Chocolate 15/5K As a chocaholic, I personally think “America’s Sweetest Race” comes with the highest payoff for all those months of hard training. After you power through your 5 or 15K, you’re granted access to the post-race party, where you’re flooded chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate in both liquid and solid varieties. Runners’ mugs are filled with hot cocoa and everyone indulges in toasty chocolate fondue and other dip-able treats. Proceeds to go the Ronald McDonald House Charities program.
